Accessibility Information
Courtenay’s Old House Hotel and Spa is located close to the city centre beside the Courtenay River, and is a lovely place to stay for folks who use a wheelchair or scooter.
As mentioned, the river-rock-fronted hotel has many features that those using mobility devices can appreciate, starting with two accessible parking spaces in the parking lot. The step-free entrance into the spacious earth-toned lobby sets the atmosphere, which is a blend of ski chalet, west coast, the natural elements and casual elegance.
The all-suite hotel offers accessible rooms that are spacious and comfortable, with plenty of space to manoeuvre around the bed and other furniture. In the suite, there is a small kitchenette that could work for some. The bathroom was spacious with plenty of grab bars. The shower was not roll-in style as it had a two-inch lip, but there is a built-in bench. Folks who can manage a pivot transfer could likely make it work. The sink had a counter cutout for wheelchair users. Light switches and thermostats located throughout the suite were also positioned at the right height for wheelchair users, but closet racks, the safe, and the door peephole were not.
Down at the lobby level is a beautiful outdoor pool, the pool deck is accessible, but there is no hoist. A large workout gym with treadmills, free weights and exercise machines is located down a floor from the lobby (and pool).
There is an excellent wheelchair-accessible restaurant located in a charming 1938 cottage overlooking the river, as well as a popular spa.
